In preparation for the next sailing season, the House Committee want to inform members that there will be an effort made to tighten up on the membership rules in relation to accessing the club premises.

There has been an undoubted custom and practice at the Sailing Club for non-members to access the club premises outside of the constitutional rules. In fairness to fee-paying members, and now that the new category of social member allows access to the club for non-sailors, please be aware that the bar staff have been asked to view membership cards on a random basis.

We are aware that this has the potential for annoying and/or embarrassing genuine members, but it is being done for the benefit of all, and we very much hope that you will support the committee in this.

In order to save embarrassment, the rules that need to be followed are:

  • Carry your membership card when in the club

  • You can sign in guests, but only 6 times per year for any one individual guest.

  • Please make sure you have signed in your guests.

  • In the restaurant, all non-members need to sign the visitors’ book up there, and pay 50p, which entitles them to a temporary day membership.

The club will continue to hold ‘open access’ events, to which non-members are welcome without having to be signed in. However, these will be kept to roughly once a month. [Such events are financially necessary for the continued functioning of the bar, and holding them means that members can continue to enjoy the very good service as at present.] All open functions will be publicised on the website and in the clubhouse.

Finally, can I thank members for their support, and say that all of the HSC committee and other  ‘activists’ are keen to get feedback on what we do for you. We do not have a monopoly of the good ideas, and sometimes what we do has an unintended consequence or two. We’re not proud – we like feedback. Please use the feedback form at this link.
